
Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of one of its classics has become the 5th largest Memorial Day Weekend opening ever! “The Little Mermaid,” starring Grammy-nominated singer and actress Halle Bailey in the timeless role of Ariel, has reportedly brought in 163.5 at the global box office since it splashed onto theater screens on May 26! Media outlets such as Variety and Entertainment Weekly say that the earnings for the Rob Marshall-directed film also include a projected $117 million (at least) from ticket sales here in the United States.
The reimagining of the original “The Little Mermaid” has received much praise and acclaim from fans stateside and around the world. Rotten Tomatoes, the leading international critic of various movies, gave the film a 67% rating while fans who gave their reviews on the site gave it a 95%. It appears that just about everyone agreed that Bailey’s sweet and soulful performance in the role of the adventurous, land-seeking young mermaid Ariel was very pleasant and enduring.
Bailey, the star of the film, shared her joy and gratitude on the projections and earnings in a simple post on her Twitter feed:
