The CRAZIEST (but fun) baking process I’ve ever seen!
Part One… The Cake Chronicles.
My Grandma’s 91st birthday is the day before Valentine’s day, usually we come over, drop off some cards and hang out with her, but my G-Mama decided to create a mini-gathering with some friends, one would cook and bring a cake, etc. We had some issues with scheduling and still had to pick up some stuff, so we would’ve had to come a bit later in the day, which was totally fine, except the cake didn’t work out, and the plan didn’t work out as planned. No worries, my Mommy decided to bake a pound cake that night, and we’d bring it over on Valentine’s Day. The night comes, she starts preparing the ingredients, goes to measure the flour… It spills. ALL OVER THE COUNTER. My mommy then had to clean that up, and started working on the batter. She pours the buttermilk to add into the batter, asks for the mixer, I hand her the mixer, and sit on the couch (I don’t like loud noises, and our mixer squeaks cause it’s literally almost as old as me). I hear something fall, and my mom looks absolutely baffled. THE CORD FOR THE MIXER KNOCKED THE MEASURING CUP FULL OF BUTTERMILK ALL OVER THE COUNTER. I freaked out and went to wipe up the buttermilk but my mommy stops me and says “I still have to know how much buttermilk to add” so she has to SCOOP THE BUTTERMILK FROM THE COUNTER, INTO THE MEASURING CUP, POUR IT OUT, POUR NEW BUTTERMILK INTO THE MEASURING CUP, AND MIX IT AGAIN. We’ve NEVER had this happen while baking, so I blamed it on it being Friday the 13th. She sprays the pan heavily, pours the batter inside, and we put it in the oven and wait for it to cook. It goes off, she lets it cool, flips it… The cake is stuck. I’m franticly banging on the pan for it to release, and my mommy recommends letting it sit upside down for another 10 minutes so we don’t accidentally force it out and split the cake. 10 minutes goes by, we check it again, it started to release! We bang on it again, feel it release, and lift the pan up… The cake is missing an entire corner. Thankfully, my mom had an amazing idea and decided to use the glaze to “glue” the cake piece back! At this point, we’re exhausted, we cover the cake and go to bed.
We get to my Grandma’s house, my G-mama makes a bunch of jokes about the cake, we put some candles on the cake (Instead of 91, my G-mama put 19 lol), grabbed our birthday tiara, and sung Happy Birthday to my Grandma! After everything, she STILL said she loved the cake, so clap it up for my mommy’s amazing baking under pressure!
But wait… That’s only the beginning of the day! What happened the rest of the day, you may ask?
